2nd Annual Fresh Start Baking Championship
BEST BAKER 2019 CONTEST
Participants must be a “home baker” and cannot hold a current position as a professional baker or professional baking instructor. Previous work experience or professional training does not disqualify anyone as a participant. If you have questions about eligibility, contact Leigh at 614.589.1990.
Entrance Fee: $75.00
Register online (use link below) by no later than 5:00PM on Tuesday, February 5th. Contest is limited to 15 participants.
Each baker will compete in all of the following categories:
• Pastry & Dessert
• Chocolate, Candy & Confections
• Breads & Doughs
When: Sunday, February 10th (Pastry & Dessert), Sunday, February 17th (Chocolate, Candy & Confections), and Sunday, February 24th (Breads & Doughs). Registration begins at each day at 3:00PM.
Where: Fresh Start Café and Bakery located at 24 North Sandusky Street, Delaware, Ohio 43015
Items will be judged on Presentation; Taste/Flavor; Originality/Creativity; and Technique/Complexity. The individual with the highest average score will be acknowledged as the winner of the category and be featured in a Fresh Start social media post. 2nd and 3rd place will receive an Honorable Mention.
The individual with the highest combined average score from all three categories will be named Best Baker 2019 and receive the following:
• KitchenAid® Stand Mixer ($750 Retail Value)
• Bakeware Set ($180 Retail Value)
• Best Baker 2019 Trophy
• Feature in a Fresh Start Social Media Post
• Feature in the Delaware Gazette Newspaper
• Addition to the Fresh Start Annual Best Baker photo wall
• Free entrance into the 2020 event to defend the title ($75.00 Retail Value)
2nd and 3rd place will receive an Honorable Mention.
Pastry & Dessert
A broad category that consists of any type of pastry or dessert, including both sweet and savory. Examples include, but not limited to Croissant, Danish, Cake, Pie/Tart, Brownies, Cheesecake, Cookies/Bars, Macarons, Éclairs, Cream Puffs, Petit Fours, etc.
Chocolate, Candy & Confections
A specialized category designed to demonstrate ability to create treats of chocolate, candy and/or sugar confections. Examples include, but not limited to Chocolate, Candies, Brittle, Caramel/Toffee, Fudge, Bonbons/Truffles, Jelly/Jam, Custard/Pudding, Meringue, etc.
Breads & Doughs
A specialized category designed to demonstrate ability to create sweet or savory items. Examples include, but not limited to Bread, Sweet Bread, Cinnamon Rolls/Sticky Buns, Biscuits, Scones, Doughnuts, etc.
